Motorcycle Brakes

Brakes are an apparatus used to slow or stop a moving vehicle.  Brakes are the device in your motorcycle which are responsible for slowing down or stopping your motorcycle when you are in speed, but there are still two parts for which you need to take care of from time to time, Tires and brakes. We are aware about the various types of brakes available in the market. It is important to be familiar with their working phenomena. Usage of brakes of any type will remain the same, to stop the vehicle.  The disc brake will also perform the same function. It will help to stop your bike instantly when you are in speed.

How does it work?

The brake disks are designed using a flat piece of metal and rigidly connected to the wheel. This brake rotor spins according to the wheel. When we apply the brake, the brake pad gets active and squeezes the brake disk. This results in a generation of friction which will stop or slow down the bike. Usage of disk brakes has increased now a days because the disk brake  gives us various advantages over a drum brake. Disk brake are better in heat dissipation than the drum brake because of the ventilated design of the disk. The disc brake provides more friction than the drum brake. Cleaning and maintaining your braking system and the brake caliper is the most important part of your motorcycle maintenance. Even if you’ve been diligently replacing brake fluid every year or two, there will come a time when you’ll need to disassemble the calipers for cleaning.

• Caliper overhaul includes replacing the dust and piston seals, and therefore requires complete disassembly.
• Remove the calipers from the fork legs and disconnect the brake lines.
• Remove the brake pads. Remove the old seals, before you do anything else, spray the inside of the caliper around the pistons with brake cleaner.
• Blow the caliper dry with compressed air.
• Next, check the pistons’ condition. They should be smooth and clean.
• Any surface corrosion should be removed with brake cleaner.
• Clean the pistons again and set them aside.
• Prepare the new seals with a light coat of fresh brake fluid, then gently insert them into the grooves.
• Clean everything one more time before you replace the pads and reinstall the calipers on the motorcycle.

Here is 5 basic tips to maintain your motorcycle:

1. Breaks:Make sure your bike’s brake fluid reservoirs are checked regularly. To increase performance of the breaks, you can install new braided steel brake lines instead of the stock ones.
2. Tires: Keep your tires correctly inflated and check the pressure regularly. Get a pencil-type tire gauge and use it regularly until you instinctively ‘know’ what your tires feel like when correctly inflated.
3. Final Drive: what transfers the power from the transmission to the rear wheel is essential to the well being of your bike and can be very expensive if not maintain properly.

4. Oil: Change your oil every 10k miles. Clean fresh oil makes the engine last for a long time. Check and keep your oil level close to maximum level all the time.
5. Battery: about once a month, make sure the battery is charged to 100%. A motorcycle battery will loose 1% of its charge even if the bike just stands in your garage.

• First of all the very needed step while changing or repairing brake of any motorcycle is that loosening the lug nuts of the tires and then removing it.
• Remove the tires and keep them aside to work on the brake system properly.
• Now locate the bolts that connects the brake caliper to the brake hose and remove these bolts. Locate the bolts attaching the wheel assembly and remove them.
• Strip the brake caliper to be changed of its mounting components.This includes the rubber boots and the bolts and sliders of the original brake caliper. Examine these components to make sure they are not rusted, warped, torn or damaged in any way.
• Apply lubricants to mounting components.

• Compress the caliper piston.Replace the brake caliper on the end of the brake hose. Leave the connection loose.
• Place brake pads on the new brake caliper, and then lubricate the caliper bolts and reattach the caliper to the wheel assembly.
• Refill your brake fluid.Replace the tire and fasten the lug nuts onto the mounts. Head to the other side of the car and repeat the same process. Once you are done, test the brakes for yourself and then take the motorcycle for a very slow test drive.
